My Heart Breaks

Why do adoptions have to be so expensive? Why? I just got another e-mail from our foster care agency about a 6 week old little boy who was born with DS. They are looking for a family to adopt him. He is not a ward of the state, his parents simply can not care for him and his medical needs (heart surgery needed, NG tube fed all the usual for kids with DS). The agency needs $3500 for a home study and then $400 for each follow up visit after the placement. Ugh. My heart breaks for this child and if we had that kind of money we would scoop him up in a heartbeat! For now all we can do is pray. Pray for God to move the mountains that lie in the way, prayer for finances to magically appear, prayer that they can find a family for this sweet little boy and prayer that one day adoptions become more affordable for families.. I HATE that finances prevent children from going to perfect homes. We would gladly take donations :) because im sure you all have money burning a hole in your pocket!!

I've been following your blog for awhile now. My husband and I are foster parents and I enjoy reading about your journey with adopting your son through the system. I have a question. Did you have to get licensed by the state to care and adopt Malachi? In my state, it’s mandatory.

That's interesting the child isn't in state custody. Who is he living with at the moment? I know the laws in every state are different. I'm in Missouri and they are known to take children into custody as soon as they find out a child can't be cared for or they have found a very legitimate reason for being abused.

I believe even if a child has a kinship from the beginning, they are still put in custody and a background and homestudy is performed. In this situation you are pertaining to, I really doubt that in my state, he would not be in custody. He would be in a foster home and the state would be searching for an adoptive home which would be no charge to the interested party.

I'm sorry if I’m not making sense. I can't sleep! :( I will pray that things turn around and it's more feasible for either you and your husband or someone else to adopt this precious infant.

Yes we are licensed through the state. We went through a lengthy process of finger prints, background checks and classes. Apparently, the family had decided to put the up for adoption before they knew he had Down syndrome, so they went to a private agency. Then when the child was born they realized they were going to have a hard time finding a family to adopt him, so they reached out to workers in the foster care system. Thus the reason his is not a ward. I believe the child is still in the hospital. I haven't had a chance to speak with our worker yet about him, so the details I have are all from a e-mail. I am hoping to speak with someone more today and get some questions answered. Thanks for praying, and commenting! I enjoy hearing from readers!! I will keep you updated!

Hi Erin,

On the west coast churches where we came from, it is totally normal to send out letters (almost like for a mission trip) asking for support for adoption. We still get a few requests a year and think it is great! It makes sense because adoptions are way to expensive and it is the calling of all believers to help care for orphans, so if someone isn't called to adopt they can help support adoptions!

Oh... sweet boy. I'll keep him in my prayers. I agree... take the time and make sure the home is safe, but let's make adoptions affordable so that these sweet ones can go to a good home. I would adopt a couple myself if my finances would allow...

Sometimes I just hate the whole adoption process! But I'm a firm believer that if it's meant to be, there will be a way.
